Geography

The Geography curriculum aims to:

  • Promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our pupils and to prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life, especially by developing an understanding of environmental issues, including the part we can play in protecting our environment and mitigating climate change.
  • Promote a positive attitude towards learning, especially through outdoor learning opportunities.
  • Ensure equal access to learning for all pupils, with high expectations for every pupil and appropriate levels of challenge and support.
  • Equip pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
  • Enable pupils to develop knowledge, understand concepts and acquire skills, and be able to choose and apply these in relevant situations.
  • Develop pupils' understanding of and use of key geographical vocabulary.
  • Develop pupils' confidence to make links between the knowledge they are acquiring and their own experience, and to be able to use their skills to develop their understanding.

Geography is taught across the school from Nursery to Year 6.

In the EYFS children develop geographical skills and understanding through continuous provision and planned enhancements, as well as teaching especially in the areas of maths and understanding the world.

In Years 1-6, Geography is taught as a distinct subject, often with links to other subjects especially Foundation subjects.
